01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Set along a calm street in Haramachi, Meguro Ward, a short walk from Nishi-Koyama Station, BYAKU. is an izakaya built around clever small plates and carefully executed meat dishes. The interior offers both counter and table seating under gentle, subdued lighting, fitting a quiet drink alone just as easily as an unhurried dinner.
From Colourful Small Bites to Hearty Plates
The menu begins with lighter fare, including seasonal fruit dressed in mashed tofu (shiraae), tomato carpaccio, and low-temperature-cooked chicken sashimi. An appetiser assortment is a simple way to sample several flavours at once, alongside drink-friendly morsels like iburigakko smoked pickles paired with cream cheese or blue cheese. Substantial main courses anchor the meal, from aromatic grilled select beef tongue and tender, slow-roasted beef tongue to koji-marinated aged pork loin and sanzokuyaki, a Shinshu-style crisp-fried whole chicken cutlet.
Drinks and a Leisurely Finish
To drink, the bar pours hot sake from Nagano labels such as Daisekkei and Masumi, alongside bottled Sapporo Red Star beer, whiskies including Ichiro's Malt, and a broad selection of shochu and wine. For the final savoury course, options include smooth Shinshu soba noodles, beef tongue dashi chazuke, or garlic rice, followed by house-made seasonal ice cream for a quiet conclusion. Operating from 6:00 pm until midnight every day except Thursday, the izakaya works particularly well when booked in advance to enjoy a meal at the measured rhythm of a set course.
